It’s the middle of the night, and you wake up with a painful toothache that won’t go away. What do you do? It’s Saturday afternoon, and your child sustains an injury to their mouth during a sporting event; who do you call? Dental emergencies often don’t happen during regular business hours; that’s why the dental team at The Smile Shop doesn’t limit their emergency dental care to regular business hours.
So, when you need quick solutions for unexpected dental issues, we are here for you!
What Is a Dental Emergency?
If any of the following issues happen to you or a loved one, it’s considered a dental emergency:
- Broken or chipped tooth
- Knocked-out tooth
- Severe tooth pain
- Dental infection
- Mouth or gum swelling
- Abscessed tooth
If you have sustained an injury to your mouth and can’t stop the bleeding, call 911 or head to the nearest emergency room.
Quick Solutions for Dental Emergencies
When the unexpected happens, the first thing we want you to do is contact our dental office. However, here are some helpful tips to help you in the meantime:
Broken or cracked tooth—Collect any broken pieces you can find and bring them with you to our dental office. Do your best to keep them clean.
Knocked-out tooth—This can be a scary experience, and acting quickly to save your tooth is essential. The best thing to do is to avoid handling the tooth’s roots and do your best to keep the tooth clean. Either place the tooth back in its socket or between your cheek and gums.
Toothache or dental infection—When you experience pain while chewing, sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, or swelling around a tooth, you may have a dental infection. A toothache doesn’t usually go away on its own, so take over-the-counter medications and contact us immediately. Dental infections can spread to the rest of your body and cause more severe health concerns, so don’t delay treatment.
