Simple, straightforward preventive care beats needing restorative care. Every time. This is especially true when it comes to oral health.

Many everyday habits that we take for granted, beyond brushing and flossing at least twice a day and regular dental cleanings, have a major impact on oral health. Let’s take a look at these normal daily habits that “secretly” help to protect and strengthen your dental health.

1. Drinking Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated does more than quench your thirst. Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria that lead to plaque buildup. Fluoridated water, in particular, strengthens tooth enamel, reducing the risk of cavities.

Additionally, drinking water stimulates saliva production, which helps neutralize enamel-eroding acids in your mouth.

2. Chewing Sugar-Free Gum

Chewing sugar-free gum after meals is excellent for your teeth because it boosts saliva flow, which, as we just discussed, helps rinse away food particles and acids. In particular, look for gums containing xylitol, a natural sweetener that inhibits the growth of cavity-causing bacteria.

3. Eating Crunchy Fruits and Vegetables

Raw, crunchy produce like apples, carrots, and celery acts as natural toothbrushes. These fibrous foods scrub away plaque from the surfaces of teeth, stimulate saliva production to wash away bacteria, and, thanks to their high water content, also dilute sugars and acids in your mouth.

4. Avoiding Constant Snacking

Frequent snacking exposes your teeth to a continuous acid attack. Limiting snacks between meals gives saliva time to neutralize acids and repair enamel. Also, if you need a snack, try to opt for teeth-friendly options like cheese or almonds.

5. Using a Straw for Sugary Drinks

If you indulge in sugary soda or juice, use a straw. This minimizes contact between sugars and your teeth, reducing the risk of decay. Also, to further protect enamel, try to position the straw toward the back of your mouth and rinse with water after consuming it.
