What are wisdom teeth, and when do they typically come in?

Just when you think you’ve survived all the years when your child was teething, there’s one more surprise when they’re teenagers—wisdom teeth. Although wisdom teeth often don’t cause problems, they can be uncomfortable and lead to crowding issues and other dental concerns.

So, when growing up means growing new teeth, what can you expect?

Understanding Wisdom Teeth: The Basics

Here’s what you need to know about wisdom teeth:

  • They are the third set of molars and are usually the last teeth to erupt.
  • Wisdom teeth are located at the back of your mouth.
  • They typically erupt as early as age 17 and before age 25, but each person is unique.
  • Some people never develop wisdom teeth, while others may only get one, two, or three.
  • The most common issues with wisdom teeth are crowding, impaction, or infection.
  • Your family dentist will monitor your teen’s development and make recommendations about wisdom teeth removal.
